Jingchao Wang is a Master student in law from Peking University and currently studying in Luxembourg in the framework of a student exchange agreement between Peking University and the University of Luxembourg. He also holds a grant from the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs for his stay in Luxembourg. Read what he has to say about his experience in Luxembourg.

  • Why did you decide to do a mobility term abroad and why particularly at the University of Luxembourg?

I have always been curious about other people and cultures. I wanted to go to Western Europe because of its interesting history and cultural heritage which is totally different from the Chinese one. I found out that Pekin University had a student exchange agreement with the University of Luxembourg’s Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance. From all the universities on the exchange list, I thought that the University of Luxembourg was the one that had most to offer to foreign students. Thus, I made my decision to come here.

  • Tell us a bit about your studies and home university.

I am a master student majoring in tax law, which is a really useful and interesting discipline to pursue. I have already gained a great deal of European law knowledge here.

Peking University is a major Chinese research university. It ranks no.1 in the country according to several rankings. My home university is proud of its outstanding faculty members, including among others 53 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

  • What were your first impressions when you arrived in Luxembourg?

When I arrived in February, I found it difficult to get used to the weather, as it was raining and snowing a lot, and to the food, which is very different from what we eat in China. However, as time passed by things changed for good, I got used to the weather, people, study and life and I fell in love with Luxembourg.

  • In how far is studying at the University of Luxembourg different from your home university?

The biggest difference between the University of Luxembourg and my home university lays in the study disciplines. Here I mainly study European Tax Law, which is only a single subject at the Peking University Law School. Another big difference is that the environment here is more international than at my home university, as the academic staff and students of the University of Luxembourg come from so many different countries and cultures.
